Evaluating the outcomes of entrepreneurship education: Approaches, trends and challenges

Scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is research into teaching, educational practice, and the curriculum. This webinar draws on a cross-university scholarship project involving colleagues from The Open University, Royal Holloway University of London, Westminster University, and Coventry University, to illustrate how scholarship can be used to assess the outcomes of entrepreneurship education and explore the meaning of effectiveness. Universities have made significant investments in entrepreneurship programs for decades, but the scope, relevance, and usefulness of entrepreneurship education are still questioned. Two World Café events, a participatory action research method designed to elicit grounded knowledge and capture multiple perspectives in a conversational process, were organized to explore the outcomes of entrepreneurship education. This methodology recognizes both the range of stakeholders involved in entrepreneurship education and the complexity of the issue at hand. Insights from the World Café events highlight the diversity of educational approaches adopted by universities, the complex nature of effectiveness and suggestions of how to measure it, and future trends and challenges. The findings also illustrate the benefits of an evidence-based approach to entrepreneurship education, including a reflection on, first, the reasons for doing scholarship work and, second, the use of evidence from SoTL to enhance entrepreneurship education.
• Key takeaways:

Describe what scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is and explain how entrepreneurship education can benefit from this

Reflect on the multiple outcomes of entrepreneurship education and understand diverse stakeholders’ views on the meaning of entrepreneurship education effectiveness

Share insights with faculty leaders, academics and educators regarding the role of SoTL in enhancing entrepreneurship education
