A new milestone has been reached within the research on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in academic environments. The AI Adoption Barriers Report is now published!
The report is based on a dual-phase study conducted in early 2026, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches:
• Quantitative data from 136 researchers in Poland, Spain, and Portugal, analysed using Structural Equation Modelling based on an extended Technology Acceptance Model
• Qualitative insights from four focus group interviews with academic leaders and supervisors in Poland, Spain, and Portugal
The findings provide evidence on the key drivers and barriers influencing the adoption of GenAI in academia. They highlight that usage is primarily shaped by perceived usefulness and compatibility with existing research practices, while trust-related concerns, data protection issues, and risks to academic integrity remain central barriers. The study also identifies structural implications for research training, academic roles, and institutional policy development.
