Navigating the Skills Landscape in Industry 4.0: Perspectives from the WATERLINE Project

WATERLINE project is creating a European Digital Water Higher Education Institution (HEI) Alliance based on the quadruple helix model of innovation. It aims to develop research, education, and entrepreneurship capacities, leveraging the resources of higher education and research institutions, public policy entities, industry and business organizations, and civil society organizations. By collaborating with these stakeholders, WATERLINE seeks to drive innovation and foster sustainable development in the water sector.

As part of the project, the “Status report on identifying learning environments and partnership barriers and opportunities” was developed to provide insights into the current state of digital water and highlight findings that will shape the industry's future.

To analyze stakeholder engagement, the Net-map methodology visually represents institutions across eight countries. An online survey was also conducted to understand societal, industry, and research needs in digital water. The survey identified barriers and opportunities for enhancing the governance of the Digital Water HEI Alliance. Besides, the report addresses skills gaps and mismatches in the "Digital Water" field from various stakeholder perspectives. It emphasizes the essential skills required for Industry 4.0, including innovation, problem-solving, analytical thinking, communication, and teamwork.

By delving into the report's findings, readers will understand the project's objectives and its transformative impact on skills development in the water sector. The insights garnered from this report will serve as the foundation for implementing an inter-university digital water campus. This unique training framework will elevate standards, ensuring the delivery of high-quality skills, knowledge, and training in response to the evolving needs of Industry 4.0.
